Situated high up on a cliff overlooking the North Sea and the River Tyne, this site has had many uses over the last 2000 years. It was originally a Anglo-Saxon settlement, an Anglican monastery, a royal castle and a coastal defence. With the waves crashing up against the rocky headland it makes for a dramatic watercolour painting.
